often
02:33
|

somewhere past the fire escape
i sat down on your bed and stayed
you lost me with that game you play
but i don't care either way
and i saw it
blew my smoke from the grass
had to swallow the ash
but i want it
so i snuck through your door
and i've been here before
but not often

dog days
02:22
|
|||
i live on the second floor
i walk to the corner store
i always try new drinks
but i'm always wanting more
you talk like a movie star
sip shots at the local bar
you want to pack your things
but the bus doesn't go that far
i'm sleeping through my dog days
i'm skipping all my plans with you
close my eyes and become someone new
i walked on that stage last week
i see it in my dreams
that one that she's always in
where she turns away from me
she sings for the radio
gets high after her show
she wants new songs to sing
but she hides behind her coat
i'm sleeping through my dog days
i'm skipping all my plans with you
live my life not knowing what to do
i'm sleeping through my dog days
i'm skipping all my plans with you
close my eyes and become someone new

street
02:05
|
|||
i'm waiting on the steps
i'm staring at the glass
throwing rocks at the siding
and pulling up the grass
you're locking up the door
you shutter the garage
dry rain on the windshield
a scatterbrained collage
the parking lot is hot
the sun is pouring in
my drink is spilling over
you're stifling a grin
the city's looking bright
branches line the street
the cul-de-sac is quiet
we're driving through the leaves
i walked outside and sat back down
i breathed in real deep and blew it back out
i slept upstairs
i changed my hair
i stood up and grew it back out

porch
02:43
|
|||
pulled up to the party
rode in on a harley
sat and laced my shoes up
shook hands and headed out back
saw you on a friday
tired from the skyway
climbing through your sunroof
to look at the
stars
drowsy in the garden
beg a little pardon
feet up on the table
kicking off both of your boots
getting real cozy
cheeks are goin rosy
hummed a little lennon
fumble with your old
guitar
sitting by the seaside
listening to b sides
turned the record over
spinning the first song again
sipping on a sunrise
laying out till nighttime
walked out to the porch
to watch all the
cars
drive by
on your front step
summer sunset
long drive out west
on your front step

moving
02:42
|
|||
echoes out the front yard
heard those kids playing out in the street
falling off their old bikes
scraping the dust off of their knees
sweaty hands, making plans for the evening
get moving again
dime book in the book case, I'll read it
tell it all to a friend
or put it down instead?
woke up in that old room
stood there spelling out a dream
digging with a flashlight
projecting decades on the screen
map it out, it gets too loud to see clearer
than I could before
cut my hair, take a stare in the mirror
end up on the floor
I don't care what I said
i’ll get moving again
get moving again

baseball
04:35
|
|||
I walked around the city today
took a picture in a window frame
saw your face from across the bar
lit by headlights from passing cars
I drove around the suburbs again
swam in rivers with different friends
shook the benches at the hometown field
caught the shortstop on camera reel
I stood around the sidewalk tonight
blew my smoke under neon lights
stumbled back home in the dark
tracking mud in from the yard
afternoon sun in the garage
fingers tracing the stereo
fell asleep with the front light on
listening to baseball on the radio

teeth
02:25
|
|||
you called me when your dog died
and i didn't know just what to say
you said it's good that I tried
to be there for you anyway
you said he lived a good life
chasing trash cans in the street
laid down in the backyard
let the sun sing him to sleep
and maybe someday you will see
that you can smile with your teeth
brush your hair back and believe
that you can stand up on your feet
and maybe someday you will see
that you're right where you need to be
and you'll smile with your teeth
you called me when you got high
and i didn't know just what to do
you said it was your first time
it's not something i'm used to
you said you had a good night
and you wanted to tell me
asked for a lullaby
let the phone put you to sleep
and maybe someday you will see
that you can smile with your teeth
brush your hair back and believe
that you can stand up on your feet
and maybe someday you will see
that you're right where you need to be
and you'll smile with your teeth

quitter
02:25
|
|||
can you see me?
can you see right through me?
i'm wondering out loud
i'm wandering out
through the city on busy streets
driving circles endlessly
every highway sign's a billboard
for the things i haven't seen
on the outside looking in
on the inside looking anywhere else
i'm a ghost
but all i haunt is myself
but i like it that way
walk around in a safer place
memorizing cracks in the concrete
until the weeds all know my name
do you haunt me?
have you figured me out?
maybe i should just grow up
and stop thinking so loud
on the outside looking in
on the inside looking anywhere else
i'm a ghost
but all i haunt is myself
so i'll quit it
try it again
what's the point of the sound i make
when it fixes nothing?
on the outside looking in
on the inside looking anywhere else
i'm a ghost
but all i haunt is myself

carrot sticks
01:25
|
|||
i wanna be a white mom in the suburbs
cutting carrots for the kids
in the autumn, in the summer
packing lunches til the spring
drop the kids off at the bus stop
got the whole day to myself
i just wanna be anyone else
could work a desk job in the city
take the train in every morning
cause the interstate's too busy
that much driving just sounds boring
get some coffee, and i’d sit down
and stack paper on the shelves
i just wanna be anyone else
i just wanna be anyone else
i just wanna be anyone else

no music
04:12
|
|||
no music played today
took my bike to the river
sat by the water
felt the bugs bite at my skin
felt how you pull me in
no radio when I drive
took the locals back home
windows rolled down
drift for a mile
I saw the sun in your smile
bad movies on tonight
we're talking about
things that we can't
take off of the couch
does it bring you down?
no headlights on in the dark
we're spinning on out
the motor won't start
i’m spiraling now
i heard your voice in the crowd
